Science Education 15XP - Exploration of K-12 Classroom Practices in Science Education

This course provides an overview and introduction to the field of K-12 science education including equity and access, pedagogy, and career exploration. Students will examine the broad range of student developmental levels and science learning progressions from kindergarten to high school. Pairs of students will be placed in local elementary, middle, or high school classrooms to observe, participate, and assist mentor teachers in instruction. As part of this class, students will develop an original lesson and deliver it to the K-12 students in their mentor teacher's classroom.

 

Fieldwork:

Fieldwork in either a local elementary, middle or high school school classroom will include observation as well as presenting an original lesson written by the student. 

 

Course Meetings:  1 hour 50 minutes per week, with 20 hours of observation in local school.

Prerequisites:

Students should be making regular progress toward a STEM major (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). Other majors are welcome to apply and your eligibility is based on the amount of science classes you have completed.
